A. Soaps are very very weakly alkaline. You could use a stronger base, such as sodium carbonate, or if that is insufficient try caustic soda.

How can i neutralize Black Mold in a room of an older building? No stupid answer to get points please.?
Q. The mold is on the central air vent and on the ceiling above the air conditioner, and I am afraid that prolonged exposure might cause health problems. I need to keep it from spreading, and neutralize it completely without renovation to the room because it is an apartment building. Any legitimate answers would be greatly appreciated, any ridiculous answers just to recieve points on your account will be disregarded and reported. Thank you.

A. Black mold is dangerous and should be taken very seriously. My BEST advice is to contact a specialist in mold decontamination. If you choose to 'do it yourself' you can try a concentrated spray of chlorine bleach (50% bleach and 50% water). Unfortunately, this will only kill the visible mold. The hidden stuff will still be present. You can purchase mold 'test kits' from Home Depot or your local health dept. You can use these kits to monitor the effectiveness of your mold treatment. Best wishes and good luck.

How can i neutralize the odor of Pesticides and Insecticides?
Q. I had a house centipede in my dorm room and sprayed a lot of RAID and ortho max defense. My room smells a lot like the pesticide that comes out of the can of RAID. What can I do to neutralize the pesticide and is inhaling it bad, even thought nothing is mentioned about it on both cans? thank you very much!
Asked by Rami A - Tue Oct 23 19:39:54 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nice thing is that those aren't terribly concentrated. Bad thing is that they are toxic to you too! Next time, I'd just squish it. Anywho, open your windows!!! that's how you'll get rid of the smell. The active ingredient in those sprays isn't what smells, it's probably the fragrance they put in there. Odds are the actual pesticide is attached to the dust (the class of pesticides in those sprays loves to attach to dust/dirt). Anywho, open a window and do what you can to air out your room. SQUISH the centipede next time too! Good luck!

How to neutralize the primer of an unspent shell?
Q. My friend and I have found a few unspent rounds while on a hike in the desert. They look like (military) .50 cal. I know that we are stupid, but we have removed the (copper?) slugs and dumped out the powder. It there a way to neutralize the primer to make them completely safe? My friend says that he heard that if we fill the shell with oil that the oil will make the primer inactive. Your suggestions will me much appreciated. Thanks.
Asked by Silvio - Sun Aug 2 19:21:11 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. well, first off, you are darn lucky those rounds were not tracer or incendiary!! Hopefully they did not have any color on the tip of the bullet! if it did, you have a dangerous situation and you are lucky you did not get hurt. Having said that, use wd 40 and spray a good quantity into the upright brass case and let it sit and soak overnight. This is the best way, but not a guarantee that it will render it inert. The best way is to have someone with a .50 cal firearm, chamber each round and pull the trigger, this will set off the primer, and since you have removed the powder and projectile it can be done at home without a trip to the range. I know how I would do it, but I will not tell you because I don't want the liability if you or… [cont.]

How do I get rid of or neutralize the smell of paint thinner?
Q. My roommate poured paint thinner into her clogged drain. The drain is still clogged, and as such the paint thinner hasn't gone away and is stinking up the house. Is there any way to neutralize the smell until we get someone to clear the clog?

A. Put a bowl of vinegar on the counter and leave it over night, It works for so many odors, so why not Paint thinner, Do it a few nights, For the drain get a Plunger and try to unclog the drain, and pour hot water down it. Do not let your room mate put any other products down the drain.

Q. Is it possible to neutralize and then restore a permanent magnet? If so how?
Asked by Shanna Loo - Mon Mar 8 19:37:47 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Demagnetization is easy. Simply raise it above the material's Curie temperature. If it's a simple metal (rather than a complex structure like a ceramic), you can remagnetize it by cooling it to below its Curie temperature in the presence of a strong magnetic field.

A. Sodium hydroxide is a strong base, vinegar is a weak acid so in theory it could be used to neutralize it if sufficient quantities is used. I suppose you should get some litmus paper to try and see if it actually does get neutralized.

How to neutralize lemon flavor in hummus?
Q. I added too much lemon juice to my hummus and now its really lemony. is there a way i could neutralize this?
Asked by Johnny - Sun May 16 15:13:13 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you find that your humus has too much lemon juice in it, do not follow the standard cooking premise that adding a little sugar will neutralize the acid in the lemon (which it will). Adding sugar to this recipe makes it nasty. Blagh! # Some recipes suggest using peanut butter instead of tahini. Bad idea. I think that it might be the sugar in the peanut butter, but it is a nasty concoction. Perhaps it would work out ok if you used natural peanut butter with no sugar added. xxx

Is it true that laundry detergent and bleach neutralize each other?
Q. When I was visiting in Florida a commercial came on for washing machines the speaker stated that when you wash clothes with bleach and detergent they neutralize each other. He was trying to sell a machine that seperated the wash cycles for the detergent and bleach. Gimmick or not?
Asked by geotees - Mon Mar 12 17:10:47 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, bleach (a solution of sodium hypochlorite) is a pretty strong acid, and soap is a base, so it sort of makes sense that bleach neutralizes soap's "bubbling" (bubbling and feeling slippery to the touch are properties of bases like soap). Bubbling is not an indication that the soap is "working"; soap still works even when it does not bubble. Anyway, I'm quite sure it's baloney.

How do I neutralize soap in a hot tub without draining it?
Q. I was setting up my tub after a long winter and cleaned my filters in dish soap and water. I rinsed them well and setup the tub, but it appears some of the soap residue was left and is sudsing when I run it. Is there any way to neutralize the soap in the water with an additive or remove the soap from the water, or am I stuck draining the tub?

A. Spa chemical supply sells a Defoamer. Would first remove the filter again and rinse through thoroughly. For future reference you can also purchase filter cleaner solution but have never used one. Just light hose sprayer attachment to thoroughly spritz the entire filter. For discoloration can soak filter in a bucket of bleach water. Thoroughly spritz after.

Is there a way to neutralize cat urine in flower beds?
Q. It appears that our cats have chosen a couple of our outside flower beds to pee in and I would like to know if there is something we can add to the soil to neutralize the urine. I know that a cat's urine is slightly acidic but do I need to add something more than, say, lime and simply adjusting the pH? Thanks very much for your time and help!
Asked by Steve in NC - Sun Apr 12 08:26:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Cat urine kills plants because of the salt content. The best way to neutralize it is water...lots and lots of water. I am not sure how this will work in a garden, but I know when a flower pot is affected the best remedy is to leach the pot 3 times with water. Have you considered installing a sprinkler system that turns on by movement-you will only need it to happen a few times and no more cat problem :o) Also you could try this little recipe-it will keep out most annimals with 4 paws. 2 parts cayenne pepper, 3 parts dry mustard and 5 parts flour. Mix together and sprinkle on areas where you don t want cats.
