The word, is sometimes rendered by its English translation "service", may refer to an elaborate formal ritual such as the Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy and Roman Catholic Mass, or a daily activity such as the Muslim salat and Jewish services. As a religious phenomenon, liturgy is a communal response to the sacred through activity reflecting praise, thanksgiving, supplication, or repentance. Ritualization may be associated with life events such as birth, coming of age, marriage, and death. It thus forms the basis for establishing a relationship with a divine agency, as well as with other participants in the liturgy. Methods of dress, preparation of food, application of cosmetics or other hygienic practices are all considered liturgical activities. Repetitive formal rites, in some ways similar to liturgies, are natural and common in all human activities such as organized sports venues. The familiar sense is an extension of the technical term in ancient Greek, leitourgia, signifying the often expensive offers of service to the people, and thus to the polis and the state. Through the leitourgia the rich carried a financial burden and were correspondingly rewarded with honours. The leitourgia became both mandatory and honorific, supporting the patron's standing among the elite. The holder of a Hellenic leitourgia was not taxed a specific sum, but entrusted with a particular ritual, which could be performed with greater or lesser magnificence. The chief sphere remained that of civic religion, embodied in the festivals: M.I. Finley notes "in Demosthenes' day there were at least 97 liturgical appointments in Athens for the festivals, rising to 118 in a (quadrennial) Panathenaic year." Eventually, under the Roman Empire, such obligations, known as munera, devolved into a competitive and ruinously expensive burden that was avoided when possible. From Wikipedia under the

Before then I was taught that too much structure in church was a man made control method that would lead to stagnation. I was told that if a church wanted to be like the early church, you would have to let the Holy Spirit guide the service. If somebody had a "testimony" they would just stand up in the middle of whatever was going on and testify. Really it was chaos every sunday. My argument now against the idea is that everybody has some form or liturgy to each and every service. When you start off every service with a prayer and then a song off the mega-prompter then a collection ect. The Catholic Church Liturgy is a gift, a guide, a familiar friend no matter where you are. "What Child is This?" is a good slow classic. "Coventry Carol" is very slow. If there is a song that's too long that otherwise fits the bill, just exclude some of the stanzas. Good luck! Q. Why is the liturgy of the world significant in liturgical celebrations? Asked by Summar - Fri May 22 22:31:35 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. (I'm assuming you meant liturgy of the WORD) Liturgy of the word is very important because it starts with the old testament- The promise that God gave to his people. Then it goes into the psalms which are prayers of praise to God. Then it goes into the Gospel, which is the New Testament- the fulfillment of the promises that God gave in the Old Testament. Also, the reading of the scriptures gives us lessons to contemplate and discuss to further strengthen our faith.
